Licence Classes

Class 2 Licence

This licence enables you to drive a heavy rigid vehicle from  6000 kgs to 18000 kgs.  The licence requires obtaining a Class 2 Learner licence, then training on fatigue management,  how to fill in a logbook, and operating a heavy rigid vehicle.  Training and assessment material is provided.  When the practical drive and theory assessments are successfully completed you are issued with a Class 2 Licence Certificate which is to be upgraded onto to your Drivers Licence.

Class 4 Licence

This licence enables you to drive a heavy rigid vehicle from 18000 kilograms to 25000 kgs.  The licence requires a theory course and practical drive.

Class 5 Licence

This licence enables you to drive a combination vehicle above 25,000 kilograms.  The licence requires a theory course and practical drive.

Licence Endorsements

Forklift

You require a F Endorsement on your licence if you wish to drive a forklift on a road, including anywhere the public have access to.

A Class 1 Licence with the F Endorsement allows you to drive a Forklift up to a Gross Laden Weight of 18,000 kilograms

A Class 2 Licence with the F Endorsement allows you to drive a Forklift with a Gross Laden Weight above 18,000 kilograms.

To drive a Forklift in the workplace you require a Worksafe NZ (formerly OSH) Certificate. For information regarding this, click here

Dangerous Goods (D)

You require a D endorsement on your Licence if you drive a vehicle that is carrying Dangerous Goods for hire and reward or above the Maximum Transport Quantity.  This endorsement is renewable every 5 years.

Passenger

You require a P endorsement on your licence when you are carrying people for “hire or reward”.
Vehicles that this endorsement covers are buses, taxis, shuttles or any private hire vehicle.

Vehicle Recovery

You require a V Endorsement on your licence if you wish to drive a tow truck or recover vehicles for hire or reward.

Wheels

A Special Type Vehicle that runs on Wheels.

Tracks

A Special Type Vehicle that runs on Tracks
Theory and practical assessment.

Rollers

A Special Type Vehicle that runs on Rollers
Theory and practical assessment.
